A farmer of Dalefield, Mr. John Thomas Hooper, age J 43, lost his life last night as the result of a motor-car accident. Ho had cycled- to Carterton, where ho was offered a ride homo in a motor-car by Mr. James 11. Mackay. When near tho concrete bridge on tho Dalefield l!o:}d, tho car plunged down tlio embankment, about 15ft., into tho creek. Mr. Mackay was thrown out into ihe stream and received a battering Mow on tho head. Mr. Mackay said ho remembered nothing of how ho out of the car. lie was wandering round dazed when Mr. Hooper's son, who had also been to Carterton, came along and found him. • Questioning brought ■to Mr. Mackay's mind the fact that he had been driving the cai- with Mr. Hooper as passenger, and he asked where, ho was. Both men searched and found Mr. Hooper pinned under the car and drowned. They telephoned to the polico • and to tho doctor and removed the body to Mr. Hooper's home, not far distant. TAXICAB OVER A BANK. ACCIDENT AT TITIRANGL OCCUPANTS' NARROW ESCAPE. Five persons who were travelling westward along the Exhibition Drive at Titirangi in a closed taxicab yesterday afternoon had a remarkable escapo from serious injury. The car, in addition to the driver, contained a man and his wife, their daughter, aged about nine, and a niece, aged about twelve. When rather more than a quarter of a-mile beyond the reservoir tho wheels ran too near tho edge of tho bank, 'which gavo way. Tho vchiclo was precipitated down a bank for about 30ft., turning over, it is stated, three times in its descent. It landed with tho wheels up in tho air against a clump of trees. Tho occupants remained in tho car until it camo to rest, when they clambered out. All wero severely shaken, but none was seriously hurt. ' Tho car, contrary to expectations, did not appear tp be seriously damaged. By a coincidence ono of tho trees against which it fell had been -partly broken about two yean ago by a car which met with a similar accident at tho same spot. Two other cars havo gono over the bank in the vicinity recently. TRAM AND CAR COLLIDE. .THREE MEN INJURED.; IMPACT WRECKS VEHICLE. [bt telegraph.—press association.] WELLINGTON. Sunday. When turning from Kent Terrace into Ellico Street at 11 o'clock last night, a five-seatcr closed car containing f t our passengers, all men, collided head-on with a moving, tramcar. Three of tho motorists were injured, as follows: — Messrs. C. L. Dobbs and J. A. Gannon, both of Miramar, and A. Dingwell. of Island Bay. Tho first two were cut more or less severely and the last-mentioned received head injuries and concussion. All ■were taken to the hospital, and. with the exception of Mr. Dingwell, who is progressing favourably, were discharged today. When it struck the tram tho car practically collapsed A number of people who lived in the street whero tho mishap occurred wero attracted by the noise. The car was damaged almost beyond repair. The engine was pushed back to the front scat and the radiator moved 2ft. When the duinbirons caught under tho fender of tho tramcar the chassis was twisted badly. Most of tho body was splintered or broken, even toward tho rear of the vehicle. Tho tramcar, which was protected by the fender, escaped lightly. Many people were returning from the pictures when the accident happened and the- corner, normally a busy one, soon was the scene of a Jarge crowd. Seven trams were held up> behind the one involved in tho collision. After somo time the line was cleared and the trams proceeded. MAN RUNS INTO CAR. SEVERE INJURIES RECEIVED. Severe cuts about the face and head and slight concussion wero suffered by Owen Coles, an employee of tlio Mangatoki Dairy Factory,- when, he collided with a light car. The injuries were serious, and necessitated hospital treatment. Running from his bach in the darkness, Coles failed to-notice the car, and ho struck the radiator, plunged faco forward, and shattered tho windscreen. He managed to extricate himself from the jagged edges and return to (ho bach, ■whero he. collapsed. A medical man inserted several-stitches before conveying Coles to hospital. PLUNGE TO RIVER BED. MOTORIST'S NECK BROKEN. [BT TET.EGIIAJ'H. —PRESS ASSOCIATION. ] BLENHEIM, Sunday. A motoring fatality occurred yesterday morning in which Mr. Carl Louis Katcr, aged 52, farmer,'of Black Rock, Waihopai ,Valley, 35 miles from Blenheim, lost his life. ( Mr. Kater was attempting to turn his tar at a ford when the vehicle slipped over a bank and fell 10ft. to the bed of the Waihopai River. Mr. Kater was thrown but ou to a rock, tho car falling on him and pinning him by the neck. When found somo hours later his neck ivns broken. An inquest was held subsequently, at which .tho coroner returned a verdict of incidental death, J
