FOOTPATHS IN MOUNT EDEN.

Sir, —It is, I think, desirable that, atfon. ■ . tion be called to the inequitable treatment accorded by tho Mount Eden Borough Council to the secondary streets • of the borough, especially to tho earliest settled ones. I would instance Ashtoa '/$■ Road, which has been a residential street over a period of, perhaps, some 50 or 60 !■ years. It is not entirely without import- vl§t ance, as, between Mount Eden and Dominion Roads, it is the only one connecting Valley and Grange Roads. It has for many years past contained no vacant • sections, and all tho .houses, reasonably close together, are of good class, paying in rates an average of, perhaps, about £l2 -fj* per annum. It also gives access to a couple of other properties, substantially rated. The condition of its footpaths today is weedy, grass-overgrown and very * unsightly, while throughout their entire ' ' length' the asphalt is most extensively broken through. A.sturdy weed, growing -f ': some 2ft, or more high, is always present, plentiful and prominent. These conditions have continuously obtained for a num. ber of years. I would express the opinion that the older secondary streets have for ' a long time been treated as the Cinderellas of the borough. Asiitonius.
