Courtland's ch hj, 4yrs 1 SHANG ..2 LUCKY TOR .• ,v .. 3 Twenty-two started. Won by a neck. ON TOP'S FINE FINISH. VICTORY JN LAST RACE. Hitherto six furlongs has been plenty far enough for On Top, who has generally been in or near tho front in the early stages of his races, hut he gave evidence of being on the improve in running out seven furlongs solidly to win tho Beerescourt Hack Handicap at To Rapa on Saturday. In tho capable hands of 11. Gray, who had won earlier on Pompeius, On Top was ridden in behind on this occasion and he was not prominent until the last furlong, when he finished with a great rattle to win narrowly from Volimond. There was heavy wagering on the race and Ruling Chief was tho actual favourite with Valreina, Volimond and On Top also well backed. Ruling Chief was slow to leave the mark, Carl Idem and Avoncourt being smartest away. Vital ran to tho load after going about three furlongs and he was making play at the home turn, where Valroina, Te Waitai, Carl Idem, Ruling Chief (wide out) and Avoncourt were in close attendance. Once into the straight the leaders were all under pressure and Volimond shot up to have charge at the distance. Volimond then looked a winner, but she failed to withstand a determined challenge from On Top, who finishod very fast. Snow Prince was finishing on strongly in third place and then came Valreina, Gny Cockade and Te Waitai.

Oray'B horsemanship was undoubtedly a factor in the success of the winner. Volimond ran ono of her beßt races and Snow Prince also shaped well. Valrcina, Te Waitai, Avoncourt and Ruling Chief all displayed speed and may do better at six furlongs. Muriel Latour, who bolted once round and threw her rider in the preliminaries, \va9 withdrawn and the money invested on her chance was refunded.

OUTSIDERS IN DIVIDENDS

KING FORD'S FIRST VICTORY.

Two outsiders in Kins Ford and Karangapai filled the dividend places in the Juvenile Handicap, for which Biddy'a Boy, on whom 11. Gray had the mount, the RafflightTremelus bracket and Hampton Park were beat supported in a good pool. After llafTlight and Rosebank had hopped out smartly, Biddy's Boy ran to the front to be the leader at tho homo turn from King Ford, Rafflight, Hampton Park, Imamint, Karangapai and Foot Rule, who were closely bunched. Once into the straight King Ford assumed command to win by half a. length from Karangapai. with Wild Time a neck away third. Rafflight was right up fomth, succeeded by Hampton Park, Foot Rule and Imamint.

Tho dividend-payers both made doublefigure returns. King Ford displayed a fine turn of speed from No. 1G at tho barrierand his victory was achieved in pleasing style, although ho had little to spare from Karangapai, who was finishing on well. Wild Timo also came homo strongly, after being weighted early.

Iliifllifc'ht, Hampton Tark, Foot Rule nutl Ininmint nil ran crcditnblo races and the run is likely to improve both Rafflieht and Imnmint. Biddy's Boy wont very fast early from an outsido position and failed to run on in the straight. SOUTHERN HORSES ARRIVE. J. H. JEFFERD'S TEAM. The Hawke's Bay trainer, J. 11.
