PLEA FOR BOW BELLS.

SUM OF £15,000 NEEDED.

A Preservation Commit teo has been formed to obtain a sum of £15,000 for the placing of tho church of St. Marv-to-Bow, Cheapside, London, in a proper state of repair.

Tlio ancient and historic church, with its cxquisito steeple, was designed by Sir Christopher Wren after tlio Great Firo of London. It was erected on the sito of earlier churches, but tho fino 11th century crypt, \vitli its still remaining Roman bricks and Saxon masonry, was presorved.

Tho famous bolls—which havo been silent for three years—now require to bo taken out and ro-hung, and two at least must bo ro-cast. Tho stceplo, which is fractured, needs to be mado sound, and a largo amount of restoration work is required to tho roof in consequence of tho destruction caused by tlio death-watch beetle. Tho crvpt and tho foundations also call for much restoration.

Contributions toward tho fund being raised may bo sent to Alderman Sir Louis Newton, 13L, at tlio Midland Bank, Ltd., 71a, Queen Victoria Street, E.C. 4, or to Sir Louis at 34-40, Ludgato Hill, E.C. 4.
