Detective-Sergeant McHugh said that when Ryan was arrested for drunkenness the aiticles wtire found in his possession, lie denied all responsibility. Ryan had boon sentenced to two months' imprisonment on February 5, and after being released on April 4 was re-arrested the following day and again on April 7, when ho was sentenced to three days' imprisonment in default of a fine. On April 4 he had been drinking in the city with other seamen "who lived on their wits."

Sentence of six months' imprisonment was imposed by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.
