LAWLESS CHICAGO.
VIOLENCE AT ELECTION.
MANY INSTANCES RECORDED
(Received April 9. 6.5 p.m.) CHICAGO, April 8.
The penchant for violence at elections in Chicago was given full play to-day when between 2,000,000 and 3,000,000 voters of the Stato of Illinois went to the polls. Tho occasion was the Republican primary election to choose that party's nominee for tho Federal Senate.
The choice lies between Mrs. Ruth McCormick, whoso father and husband have been members of tho Senate, and who is now a member of Congress, and Mr. Charles Deneen, the sitting member, who defeated Mrs. McCormick's husband six years ago for nomination. Mrs. McCormick is practically certain of victory over Mr. Denceri. She has carried Cook County by a majority of more than 150,000 votes. Also she is leading elsewhere in the State. The campaign which has been extremely bitter culminated in Chicago today with an attempt to kidnap an alderman, a case of shooting and a bomb outrage. Also there are reports of gangsters' raids and other instances of lawlessness.
Seven men brandishing pistols crowded the motor-car of tho alderman mentioned against the kerb, but the police intervened and saved him. They arrested three of his assailants.
The State's attorney, Mr. Swanson, threatened that indictments would follow if the police, undor the control of the Mayor, Mr. W. Thompson, showed partiality in enforcing tho election laws. It is alleged that 50,000 false names were registered for voting purpose.';. Reports from the lawless areas of the city showed that violent tactics were being employed all day.
