GREAT JOURNALIST.
FREEDOM OF MANCHESTER
HONOUR TO MR. C. P. SCOTT.
(Received April 9, 6.15 p.m.)
'British. Wireless,
RUGBY, April S.
A great British journalist was honoured to-day when Mr. C. P. Scott, who recently retired from the editorship of the Manchester Guardian after 57 years' service, received the fraedom of the City of Manchester.
The Lord Mayor of Manchester, Mr. P. N. Barclay, who presided, said Mr. Scott had regarded his position as a public trust. He had fought to secure justice and freedom, both at home and abroad. No # ons had done more to increase the prestige of British journalism throughout the world. He was an international figure.
What had probably inspired the greatest admiration-for Mr, Scott was his absolute fearlessness. More than once he had literally taken his professional life in his hands by' espousing a manifestly unpopular causo.
