In extending its campaign of economy in tho Stato Public Service, tho Victorian Ministry lias decidqd on reductions in tho allownnco mado to oflicers who aro required to use their own motor-cars for departmental purposes. When last in office tho Hogan Ministry reduced this allowance from lOd a mile to (i scale which provided 5d a mile for cars of less than 9 h.p., 6d for cars from 9 h.p. to 12 h.p., and 7d a mile for cars of moro than 12 h.p. It lias now been decided to make tho allowance 4d for cars of loss than 9 h.p., and 5d for cars of moro than 9 h.p. It is estimated that the change will save about £BOOO annually.. Several of tho officers affected threaten to discontinue tho uso of their own cars and biro others when engaged on departmental business.
