RACING.

iWAIKATO MEETING.

THE JUMPING EVENTS.

BRIGHTON HURDLES ENTRANTS

KEEN INTEREST IN FORM.

Tor the reason that tho runners will include a number of candidates for the Brighton Hurdles, which is to be decided at tho Auckland Racing Club's Autumn Meeting, fonn in tho hurdlo events at tho Waikato Racing Club's meeting is sure to be followed closely. Eight, of tho 11 acceptors for tho Frankton Hurdles are also candidates for the Ellerslie race and the only ones who do not claim the dual onus gement are Waltzor, Temperature and Tow/i Lad. The presence of so many Brighton Hurdles candidates is going to add considerably to the interest in tho first day's contest end two horses who3e running will receive particular attention aro Mangani and Kawini. As he has hod no racing lor eomo months, Mangani may not bo quite »r forward as Kawini, who recently demonstrated that ho is well by running seoond in a high-weight handicap at Pukekohc. Kawini's chance would bo improved if the distance were longer than a milo and a-half, and, in the event ot defeat hero, he may be a better proposition on the second day, when the distance extends to a milo and Ithree-quaitera. •

The Lamb and Glenstar are improving hurdlers with chances, and if Glenstar's jumping has improved ho is sure to tako » lot of beating. The best of the others appear to be Master Roley, Glena Bay and Grand Arch, who are all likely improvers. Master Roley ha 3 not raced up to expoctationn lately, but he is capable of doing better than he has yet accomplished and this may be his chance to atone for recent 'defeats. Glcna Bay was a winner at iWhangarei last week, where he'should have won more easily than he did, and, although ihe class is stronger, he may again be prorainent in this race. Grand Arch ha» shown promise in his few starts ovor hurdlos and slight improvement on his form at Te Aroha and Paoroa would give him a chance also.

MAIDEN STAKES FIELD.

THIRTY-TWO ACCEPTORS.

Besides frequently producing surprises, novice events at the Waikato Racing Club's meetings almost invariably draw large fields, and the Maiden Stakes, to be decided on Saturday, will be no exception. There are no fewer than 82 horses engaged and it is likely that the runners may be more numerous than in the same race last year, when (he field numbered 23. The candidates include about a dozen horses that have shown some form in notching minor plscings and a number of unknown quantifies, arid the winner is well concealed. The horses that have previously displayed aome dash. with the colours up include Day Guide, Nassau Lady, Land Measure, Caulis, Royal Visitor, Trig, Biddy Comet, Royal Finance and Glenison, and the most likely improvers in this lot may be Royal Visitor, who is coming on with every race, Nassau Lady, Biddy Comet, and Trig. Caulis is anolher that may soon improve upon his past form and possibilities among the others are • Stoneherge, Etehi liangi and Intent. Luck in the draw for post positions and the early running may have ft bearing on the result and backers may have difficulty in making a final eelection. Some who may '«na.ke a strong appeal aie Royal Visitor, Nassau Lady and Biddy Comet."

RULING CHIEF'S CHANCE. BEATEN IN LAST TWO STARTS. L. When Ruling Chief won a novice event &t Te Rapa in the Bpring he scored with great ease, and, to say the least of it, his performance was very impressive. In the meantime he ha,a raced only at Trentham, where he has been beaten twice, and his admirers are at a loss to account for his failures. With his undoubted speed, the three-year-old should have dono better than he has in his latest outings, especially as he to have had every chance at his

last appearance. ! Ruling Chief is umong the acceptors for the Beerescourt. Hack Handicap at Te Rapa on Saturday, and, afl he will be racing on his homo track, that race may provide him with an ,excellent opportunity to atone for- his recent defeats. With 7.10 he is handily Weighted in a field that is not overstrong and the chances are that ho will once again b<) entrusted with solid support.

JOCKEYS RECOVER.

K. VOITRE TO RIDE TO-MORROW.

K. Voitre, who has been able to ride Work at Awapuni during tjie past week, will be in the saddle again at Hastings to-morrow. He had both arms friyitured in »n accident on the New Plymouth courso two months ago. The jockeys 'A. Hobson and G. Lamb, who were admitted to tho I'almerston North Hospital nearly three weeks a«o and were unconscious for several days, are now repbrtcd to be making satisfactory progress toward recovery. Hobson fell when schooling Mister Gamp, and Lamb was injured tt the Oroua Downs sports. C. Eastwood, "who was sevorly injured at the Taknpuna meeting in January, has made a good recovery.
