ONEHUNGA INTERESTS.

CHAMBER OF '.COMMERCE*

AREA FOR INDUSTRIES,

The Onehunga-Manukau Chamber of Commerce met last evening, the president, Mr. D. H. Kirk Jones, presiding.

Regarding the recent removal of the Royal Oak post office to .premises some distance from the business area, the chairman said he had ascertained that no premises nearer the business area bad been obtainable at the rent the department could pay for a post office of that grade. It was decided to thaflk the chief postmaster for providing more commodious premises, but to express regret that ho

had been unable to obtain premises in a more central position. The chief postmaster advised that the small quantity of correspondence from Onehunga for despatch by the daylight limited express did not warrant the extension of the city midnight clearance to the Onehunga pillar-boxes. The morning clearance was in timo for the Taneatua train leaving Auckland at pine o'clock, and this served the centres in the Waikato. The clearance was also in time for the Whangarei express. The Winter Show Committee advised that the annual exhibition, would be held from July 7 to July 19, and that a grant of £SO would be made toward the cost "of each district court. It was decided not to prepare a court, as the grant was inadequate. The future of the Manukau foreshore, and the Tamaki isthmus in general, as a manufacturing area, was referred to by the chairman. He said one of the greatest hindrances to profitable manufacturing was heavy overhead cost, chiefly due to high-priced land, whereas many convenient sites were obtainable on the Manukau at low cost. A committee was appointed to gather detailed information regarding the area, in order that the chamber might give it officially to prospective manufacturers. The committee comprises Messrs. John Park, E. Morton (Mayor), J. E. Green, J. IL Ross, A. G. Painsbuxy, | and the president.
