TROTTING.
SONOMA HARVESTER SOLD. SALE AT RANGIORA. HARVEST CHILD PASSED IN. [CY TELEGRAPn.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CIIRISTCHURCH, Monday. At Mr. H. Matson's sale of trotting stock at Rangiora to-day, there was not extensive bidding, but several of tho stock of Mr. C. E. Lindsay and Mr. R. Ward changed hands. Mr. S. Rodgers had a number of entries, but tho resorves were considered too high. Tho best prices were as follows : _ , On Account of Mr. C. E. Lindsay.-Brood mare, Gwenchild, purchased by J. R. and S. W. frizz ell, 200gns: bay colt by Sonoma Harvester—Flossie Dillon, purchased by C. S. Donald, lOOgns. On Account of Mr. R. Ward.-Importcd stallion, Sonoma Harvester, purchnsed by J. Davidson, Addington, at 250gns: bay gelding, 2yrs, by Sonoma Harvester—Dalwhinnie, purchased by W. H. Lake, at lOOgns. , The bay gelding Harvest Child was passed in at OOOgns. A bid of 275gns for the bay mare Eva Reta failed to elicit business. AMALGAMATION OF CLUBS. " A BUSINESS PROPOSITION." The proposed amalgamation of the two trotting clubs in Auckland is a ™ ov ® mo "| based on common sense (says ' Sentine in tho Otago Daily Times). It olso makes a strong appeal from an economic point of view, as tho sporting public will only havo one course to maintain instead of two. bo long as no loss of racing dates follows tho amalgamation, there is everything to gain and nothing to lose by the fusion of the two clulw, Thoso in control of tho sport will occupy ono homo instead of two. jnd so savo expense. The Dominion is far too thickly populated with racecourse and trotting tracks, and the fact means an unnecessary tux 011 the purse of tho sporting P 'lf amalgamation is desirable in Auckland, it should certainly bo also carried out in Christchurch. The two leading clubs now use Addington, and tho New Brighton Club depends and draws its revenue from tho same source us the principal club. Not so very long ago Christchurch maintained Ihreo raco tracks. Tho sale of Canterbury Park reduces tho number, which is still ono too many. Now Brighton has a right to survive, (because trainers have Bet vp homes and stables in its vicinity, and the existence of tho course has to be considered from that point of view. Thcro is, however. 110 reason why tho Metropolitan and Canterbury Park Clubs should not amalgamate. Some objection may be raised on tho ground that ono club may be richer than the oilier and so decline to pool tho .funds or assets. As tho funds and assets do not belong to either club, that objection falls to tho ground. The assets belong wholly and solely to tho sporting public, and tho clubs' stewards nro merely custodians of the purse. There is no private interest involved, and neither club expended a penny out of its own pocket that did not in the first instance come from the public. So that tho objection to amalgamation from a financial point of view lacks foundation. Amalgamation should bo carried out as a business proposition in the best interests of the sport.
