MEADOW LARK'S GOOD EFFORT. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.'] OAMARU, Saturday. Investors started oil badly at Oamaru to-day by extending strong support to Gayorua and Gala Day in tlio Autumn Hurdles, as tho outsider, WhifHer, got up in the last few strides to beat the pair of them. Gala Day took charge from the start and was still in front when the last fence was cleared, but showed signs of tiring commencing the run home. Gayonia then challenged him and appeared to bo
'lie winner, but Whiffler camo with a be
lated run and in a close finish bent Gayoma by three-quarters of a length, with Gala Day only a head away. Antrim Boy was a poor fourth and Oriflamb and Mime were ben ten off. Betting on the' Trial Stakes was well distributed, Kentish Lady carrying a little over 100 tickets moro than Appeal and Valuator. Valuator took charge when headed for the post and soon had tho race in hand, going on to win convincingly by two lengths from Kentish Lndy, who was slow to move off and was well back at the straight entrance. Tea .Urn also finished fast and beat Totolomai by a neck for third money. Palnda. headed tho remainder. Topero was installed favourite over Money Mine for tho President's Handicap, from which Meadow Lark, Master Clarence, King Balboa and Waving Corn wcro withdrawn. Night Lad soon opened up a gap from Mount Boa and Money Mine, but gradually weakened approaching tho straight entrance. Money Mine forged to tho front when straightened up for homo and although momentarily challenged by * Topero inside the distance ho recorded an easy win by two lengths, Topero was four longths in front of Mount Boa, and there was a gap to Taboo and Night Lad. Money Mine won well. Topero was slow in moving off and was blocked a couple of timoß when essaying a forward run. He finished on satisfactorily, but wus probably feeling tho effects of his "Waimato effort. Night Lad closed up quickly and can be classed as the disappointment rf the season. Taboo was not allowed to go to the front as at Waimate, but did no better over the final stages. Tho Hack Handicap provided an unusual coincidence in -that tl'ie brothers, Fair Money and Fair Exchange, wero sent out first and second favourites. Thoy held the leading positions throughout. First Money had an advantago of two lengths entering the straight and was challenged by Fair Exchange at the distance, but won by a length. The others wero outclassed. Tho third horse, Audience, who wus again badly favoured over the early stages, was four lengths away. The winner was a staunch favourite, carrying over a-quarter of the machine total.
The Flying Handicap was responsible for a sterling effort by Meadow Lark, who carried 70 tickets less than Arrowmir. The latter took charge at lho end of a furlong. He had a useful advantage from Full Fling, Ace of Hcarta and Meadow Lark
entering the straight, but tveakened iti the run home. In an interesting finish Meadow Lark won by three-quarters of a length from Full Fling, who beat the tiring Arrowmir by two lengths Gay Sonnet finished well and was only a neck behind Arjrowmir. Rin Tin Tin, who got squeezed out on the rails at the start, was next* The public went strongly for Stealth in the concluding event, the Parkside Handicap, but he beaten out of a place. Solgele rushed to the front at the end of a furlong and although Don Jose issued a determined challenge in the run home Solgele held on to beat him by two lengths. Hazp was a similar distance away third, with Stealth, Dumblano and Chiokwheat next. SECOND DAY'S EVENTS. [BY telegraph.—press association,] OaMaRU, Sunday. Red Fuchsia and Elicit were associated in a round over tho battens, tho pair jumping four fences very attractively. With good pace on Mister Gamp and Aurora Borealis set out over a round, but at the fence at the top of the straight Mistor Gamp took ofl too far back, and striking the top batten, crashed hoavily. A. Hobsou, his rider, was rendered unconscious and was taken to hospital. Ilis condition is not thought to be serious, although he may bo prevented from riding at the meeting. NOTES FROM TRENTHAM. RAIN IMPROVES TRACK. HISTORIC WORKS WELL. [BY' TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Saturday. A good fall of rain lust night was much appreciated by trainers at Trentham with horses engaged at Awapuni next week, and the result was a general uso of the trial grass gallop this morning.
