SWIMMING.

RACE AT HELENSVILLE. \ ' JUNIOR COMPETITOR'S SUCCESS. EVENING CARNIVAL HELD. Fourteen Auckland swimmers competed in the Helensville Amateur Swimming Club's half-mile race in the Kaipara River on Saturday afternoon. Ideal conditions prevailed for the event and only one of the 18 starters, including one lady, failed to complete the distance. The result of the race was a victory for the 13-years-old Auckland junior champion, Noel Crump. North Shore, wild swam a remarkably fine race, his time, 12m 545, being the second fastest registered. Crump won the harbour race for the Morgan Cup last week. Fastest time, 11m 333, was returned by R. Porteous.. Mount Eden, who beat his club mate, H. Moore, by 2s and gained second place.

The limit swimmers. Miss Pidgeon find Strong (180s), had a lead of about 200 yds. when the scratch man, R. Porteous, was sent away. When a quarter of a mile had been covered Moore (130s) was slightly ahead of Crump (130s). Then followed Miss Pidgeon and Strong, while behind them bunched together were McGregor (110s), Curtayne (120 a), McKay (100s) and R. Pidgeon (100s). Porteous was a short distance further back, having made up much leeway. For the remainder of the distance the issue rested between Crump, Moore and Porteous, the first-named finally finishing 19s before Porteous, who beat Moore by 2s for second place.

In the evening a carnival was held in the Domain Baths, a large attendance of spectators witnessing many keenly-contested races. About 40 Aucklanders were among the competitors, and most of them gained places in either the heats or finals of the principal events. A total of 836 entries, of which 520 are individual, have been received for the Auckland Public Schools' Swimming Association's first annual championship meeting to be held at the Tepid Bathß. The heats will be decided to-morrow afternoon and the finals on Wednesday evening. Four cups presented by the trustees of the Herbert Smith Fund are to be awarded to schools gaining the highest aggregate points for boys' and girls' events and to the schools winning the boys' and girls' relay races. A certificate is to be given to the winner of each championship event. PONSONBY CHAMPIONSHIP. Tlie Ponsonby Swimming Club decided its 100 yds. championship event on Saturday. The contest was very close, a touch only separating the placed swimmers. The result was as follows:—Roper, 1; Johnston. 2; Midgely, 3. Time, 675.
