CONCRETE ROADING.
PANMURE TO HOWICK. PAVING ANOTHER SECTION. MANUKAU COUNTY WORK. An important concrete roading contract has been let by a special committee of the Manukau County Council, which was set up to make the final selection from six tenders received. The work comprises miles, from Panmure to Howick, being all that part of the thoroughfare within the Manukau County. After consultation with the Main Highways Board, which will subsidise the work £3 for £l, the committee decided to let tho contract to H. Bray and Company, Limited, of Onehunga, who will start operations within a week or two. The contract involves reconstructing the present road and paving with concrete to a width'of 18ft., with the usual 4ft. shoulders on each side. The council's engineer, Mr. J. R. Page, has taken the opportunity to alter tho numerous short curves into wide sweeps.
The work will occupy several months and will necessarily cause some inconvenienco to the travelling public. This will be minimised, however, by the fact that Mr. Page's plans provide for part of the road to be made in two separate strips, each 9ft. wide, so that tho public can use one side of the road while the other is being constructed. In some places it has been possible to arrange for the traffic to bo diverted.
This new roadway will add considerably to tho facilities for travel in the vicinity of Auckland, and will become a popular drive. The county authorities have viewed the matter as one of necessity, deeming a permanent road in concrete the only relief to the ever-increasing cost of maintaining the present unsatisfactory macadam road.
