THE BYRD EXPEDITION.
FLAGSHIP SAILS TO-MORROW.
LEADER'S STAY IN DOMINION*
'BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] DUNEDIN, Friday.
When the City of New York and the Eleanor Boiling have cleared Otago Harbour ■ for Tahiti Rear-Admiral Byrd and Lieutenant Charles F. _ Lofgren. will be detained in Dunedin for several days winding up the business affairs of the expedition. Regarding his movements after the vessels sail and all business is settled Rear-Admiral Byrd is still indefinite. His plans will depend on the steamship programmes and he will probably join the City of New York at Tahiti and make the remainder of the journey to New York on the flagship of the expedition. Instructions have been -given that the City of New York must sail from Dunedin on Sunday afternoon. All available hands are now getting the ship ready for sea after her docking. . She is in capital trim for the voyage, a fresh coat of paint from the keel to the topmast giving her a decidedly businesslike appearance. The Eleanor Boiling, which has also had a new coat of paint, will not leave Dunedin until Sunday, March 30. G/ven fair weather the ships should reach New York about two months after their departure from Dunedin. The Eleanor Boiling will catch up with the City of New York at Tahiti and they v.-ill journey across the Pacific to Panama in company. It is probable that the steamer will take the barque in tow.
