SEIZURE OF VESSEL.
CASE OF CHIEF CAPILANO.
ACTION HELD ILLEGAL.
(Received March 22, 12.35 a.m.)
VANCOUVER, March 21,
The status of the British Admiralty Court in Hongkong is challenged in the seizure by the United States of the Canadian ship Chief Capilano, en route from Vancouver to Japan. The Seizure was made on the strength of a claim by an export firm of £4OOO through the loss of cargo in the sinking of her sister ship, the Chief Maquilla, which the firm attributed to unseaworthiness. The owners declare that international law has been violated in the seizure of the vessel, which was proceeding from a British port to a foreign country, and have protested to the Dominion Government.
The British Consul at Seattle, Mr. Pelly, has lodged a protest with the Federal Court against the action of the United .States coastguard in firing on the Chief Capilano, and the seizure of the ship in Canadian waters. The Federal Court at Seattle held a night session and declared the seizure illegal, and quashed the attachment, thereby averting international complications.
