THIS AFTERNOON'S CONTEST*
MAYOR WELCOMES VISITORS.
Members of the visiting rowing crews, which will compete in the interprovincial eight-oar championship for the Hallybnrton Johnstone Cup at the Whau Riverthis afternoon, were welcomed to Auckland yesterday by the Mayor, Mr.: George Baildon. Mr. Baildon said that the event would be the first of its kind to be held in Auckland and he regretted that a Canterbury crew would not be able to compete. The managers of tha various visiting crews responded.
Some of the visiting oarsmen were entertained by the St. George's Rowing Club on Thursday evening. The Wellington crew arrived yesterday morning. All the visitors are fit and each crew is keen on winning the championship cup, which has only been competed for twice pre-, viously. It was won first in 1928 by the Canterbury crew and it is held at present by Otago, which will enter a strong crew to defend the trophy to-day.
