RETURN OF DESERTER.
BACK TO THE ARMY AGAIN. Curious facts were given in evidence at Marylebone Police Court the other day regarding the position of Ernest Reginald White, a gunner at the Brigade Depot, Royal Artillery, Woolwich. White was charged with being a deserter. since January 6. Constable Jones told the magistrate that he received information from White's present unit that he was an absentee, and during inquiries he discovered that White was also a deserter from the same unit, he having rejoined on January 1. The Magistrate: There must, have been some extraordinary mismanagement. How could they take the man on again when he was a. deserter from the. same unit ? Constable Jones: As far as I can gather, he had a little domestic .trouble, and when his unit was about to go abroad on diaft he decided to stay behind to see the trouble through. He missed the draft, and being unable to face his return, decided to rejoin. He did so under the name of Robert, Sweetland, and was accepted.
