HOME FOR MENTAL PATIENTS.
Sir,—The many residents in the vicinity are very much alarmed at the proposal to establish a ward for mental patients at the corner of Woodward and Gladstone i Roads, Mount Albert. The proposed site lis in thQ centre of a populous district I and the establishment of such a ward j would undoubtedly depreciate the values iof tho surrounding properties. The most j serious aspect of the matter, however. | is the fact that the ward would be oppoi site one of the largest schools in Auckland. It would be a scandal to have | mental patients in so. close a proximity | to young .children, especially in view of j the fact that the building in which the | ward is to be established is separated ! from the road by a mere hedge. It is ■ hard to understand the indifference of the Mount Albert Terminus Ratepayers' Association in this matter. Even though the majority of the members are resident in a district remote from the site of the proposed ward,-they should be sufficiently disinterested to support any movement for the general well-being of the borough. The residents affected and par ents of children attending the school will, I am sure, support anv action of the Mount Albert Borough Council in opposing the proposal. Pabem.
