STOCKS AND SHARES.

THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE

HESITANT TONE DEVELOPS

After two days of brisk trading the hesitant tone apparent early in the week returned to the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday. A reduced volume of business was done at prices which did not show much variation from the current levels. Inscribed Stock, 1938, 4£ per cent., was dealt in midway between the prices of Thursday's two transactions, £97 5s and £97 10s, and sellers' final quotations, £97 10s, were 2s 6d lower than at the previous close. In War Bonds, 4£ per cent., offers for tho 1938 and 1939 issues were raised 2s 6d to £97 7s 6d, and for the 1941 issue 10s to £97 15s, but no sellers appeared. Banks provided two transactions. Commercials of Australia were done unchanged at 21s 10d, and quotations closed Id easier each way than on Thursday. Unions of Australia, which have sold steadily at £l2 or botter for a month past, changed hands at £ll 19s, which sellers had quoted on tho previous day, but for moro £l2 was asked. Buyers remained in the market at a rise of 6d for Australasias, and English, Scottish and Australians, but nono were available. Nationals of New Zealand and Nationals of Australasia, for which £5 17s 6d and £l4 17s were offered at the mid-day call, also disappeared from the market. Sellers of New South Wales were 5s lower at £39 10s. In coal Grey Valleys rose 5d with sale at 275, and for more sellers asked 27s 6d. In gas Aucklands were done twice at tho current price of 23s 6d. The only other business was done in tho miscellaneous section, Wellington Meats having sale at 7s 6d, unchanged since the last transaction occurred in Wellington in October. CLOSING QUOTATIONS.
