THE WHAU BRIDGE.
COST OF THE STRUCTURE.
WAITEMATA COUNTY'S SHARE. THE NARROWER TYPE FAVOURED Formal notice under Sectio,n 156 of the Public Works Act, 1928, that it is necessary to replace the present wooden structure at the Whau Creek by a reinforced concrete bridge sjnore adequate to meet the present traffic demands, has been served by the New Lynn Borough Council on the Waitemata County Council. The notice suggested that as a result of traffictallies taken last January the Waitemata County should contribute 11£ per cent, of the cost of the work after the Main Highways Board subsidy had been deducted from the total cost.
The county engineer, Mr. A. Murray, said the estimated cost ot a 50-foot structure was £13,C00, of which amount the Main Highways Board would contribute £5600, calculated on a basis oi £2 for £1 subsidy on a 28 foot structuie The county council's contribution toward the net cost of the bridge would therefoie be 11£ per cent, of approximately £7400, the sum of £BSO. With the 28-foot structure, the estimated cost of which was £8450, toward which the Highways Board would contribute £5600, the local bodies' contributions would amount to £2850, and the Waitemata County Council's portion to £328. If the 50-foot structure as proposed were gone on with, the bridge would cost the county the additional sum of £522, and it rested with the council to say whether or not this additional cost was warranted, in view of the additional service that would be received from a bridge which could then be called permanent.
The engineer recommended the council to agree to the allocation as proposed, and that no objection should be made to the construction of a 50-foot bridge. He felt satisfied that if the 28-foot structure were proceeded with it would be necessary to widen the bridge well within the period of ten years, if traffic continued to increase at the present rate.
The council agreed to accept allocation, but decided to recommend a 28-foot structure.
