A DANGEROUS DOMAIN.
Sir, —If the City Council desires to relieve unemployment, and at the same time benefit the community, it could not do better than employ men to underscruh that portion of the Domain on the Parnell side which, as every Aucklander knows, has been for many years a jungle in which thugs and vagabonds of every description find refuge. It is a menace to the safety of the public, and a perpetual source of anxiety to the policO authorities. All the dense undergrowth should be cleared out so as to leave open spaces between the larger trees, which should be left as fat apart as to admit of clear observation between them. The open spaces should be sown down in grass, which could be kept down by grazing sheep as is done in London parks. Whatever such work might cost, it would be money well spent, it would relieve unemployment throughout the coming winter and prove a protection to the public from thieves and vagabonds. That such a work is necessary is evidenced from the attack made on Tuesday _ last in broad daylight upon a lady visitor from Australia, who had her handbag snatched from her with violence, the thief makihg good his escape by dashing into this iungle while being pursued.
