NEW YORK EXCHANGE. SHARP RISE IN STOCKS. NEW YORK, March 19. The fact that call money was 2 per cent., the lowest rate since 1925, encouraged a strong speculative spurt on the Stock Exchange, with the " bull" market resembling the days before the slump last autumn. The ticker was 30 minutes behind.

Many small traders cam? back, and prices jumped precipitately, including United States Steel, and many industrial stocks and railway shares. Profit taking late in the day caused only a small reaction.

(Received March 20, 9.45 p.m.) MELBOURNE, March 20. In the hides market to-day lightweights and badly-conditioned parcels were a full farthing lower. In the other grades values wero hard to maintain. RAILWAY WORKSHOP SITE. The leases of oight lots on tho site of the old railway workshops. Nowmarket, will be offered at auction by C. F. Bennett, Limited, at their rooms, corner of Queen and Shortland Streets, at noon today. Tho sections, which have railway sidings, will be available on Zealand Railway leases.
