"DRINK HIS TROUBLE."
MAN CONVICTED OF THEFT.
SELLING STOLEN CARPETS.
Sentence of six months' imprisonment was imposed in the Police Court yesterday on William Anderson, aged 47, bootmaker, who was charged with the theft of four pieces of carpet, each valued at 2s 6d, at Auckland on March 14. "I have no recollection whatever of taking the carpets," said accused, who pleaded not guilty, stating that he had been drinking heavily for a fortnight. Evidence called by the police showed that accused had offered the carpets for sale and could not state where he had obtained them. Anderson had been around the streets lately and had been drinking heavily. "He has 31 convictions, most of them for drunkenness, drink being his trouble," said Chief-Detective Hammond. "He got three months for theft last year," commented Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in passing sentence.
