NEXT WINTER'S NEEDS.
UNEMPLOYMENT FEARED.
RELIEF MEASURES URGED.
Emphasising the need of immediate preparations for unemployment relief in the coming winter, as distinct from more elaborate measures, the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce yesterday passed the following resolution:— "That this chamber is of opinion that the second report of the Unemployment Committee is generally on sound lines so long as the principle of 'no work, no pay" is observed; but urges immediate consideration of the problem of unemployment that is likely to be prevalent during the coming winter, particularly in the direction of developing waste and partlydeveloped lands under the provisions of Part 11. of the Land Laws Amendment -Act, or in any other direction of productive effort."
Referring to the matter at a conference on unemployment last evening, the president of the chamber, Mr. M. Stewart, said that obviously neither the Unemployment Committee's Scheme nor that propounded by mqmbers of the chamber could be effective befor<s the end of the year. It was to be noted that the Auckland Hospital Board was alarmed at the prospect for the coming winter, and had asked the Mayor to call a couference of local bodies to consider what should be done. What seemed most urgent was to provide for immediate needs, but it was to be hoped that some agreement could be leached on the question of a permanent remedy.
