LAUNCH DESTROYED.
FIRE FOLLOWS EXPLOSION.
NOTHING SAVED FROM VESSEL.
ACCIDENT IN MANUKAU HARBOUR Fire, following a loud explosion, destroyed the 40ft. launch Tot off Mangere Point, in the Manukaii Harbour, yesterday morning. The launch, which was owned by Mr. W. White and J. J. Craig, limited, left shortly before five o'clock with sand barges in tow for the sand banks in the lower reaches of the harbour. Off the point, it ran on to a bank, and immediately an explosion occurred, and the en-gine-room burst into flames. Mr. White, who was on board, considers that when the launch struck the impact must have overturned a drum of benzine and brought it into contact with a hot pipe. The flames soon swept the launch and nothing was saved. The decking and fittings, including a 25 horse-power engine, as well as the personal belongings of Mr. White, were destroyed, and the hull was burned to the water line. The Tot was insured for £6OO with the London and Lancashire Insurance Company.
