ANSWERS to correspondents.

"Diablo," Otahuhu.—Sea De'il won tho Great 'Northern Steeplechase in 1922 and the Great Northern Hurdle Raco in- 1924. Kca De'il was fualta in 1912, so that he was rising 10 years old when he won tho first-named/event and rising 12 yearß old at the date of his bucccss in the last-named race.

NEXT ? CLASSIC EVENT.

GREAT NORTHERN ST. LEGER. BY PHAETON. The fact ot Honour, Pink Coat r.nd Hunting Cry being out of training, the outlook in connection with the approaching Great Northern St. Leger is not rendered nearly so attractive as if that trio were likely to fulfil their engagement in the Ellerslie race. Then again Waterline, vho ran Vali to a head for first honours in the JCe\v Zealand St. Leger, is not engaged, fend that is to be regarded as another disappointment. Vali is given credit for a game display which lande.d him a winne* in the classic race at Trentham last Saturday. and, in, the absence of Honour, Pink Cost, Hunting Cry and Waterline, his prospects of taking rank as a dual winner cf classic honours will be regarded as of the bright order. Jaloux ran third to A'ali and Waterline in the New Zealand St. Leger, and, as he was only separated by a head and a neck from the two leaders end subsequently ran a good race in tbe Autumn Handicap (one mile and •three furlongs), Mr. G. D. Greenwood may be encouraged to send the Sutala gelding up to Ellerslie in order to contest the Great Northern St. Leger. Forfeits for Jhe Ellerslie race fall due on the 28th

inst., and Jha posting of the list may be expected to throw some light on the probable strength of the field for the" rate ■et down for decision on April 19. GLARE AND HIS RECORD. PROMISING FOUR-YEAR-OLD. Glare, who had his name enrolled as a record-breaker .when ho won, tho Autumn Eindicap (one mile and three furlongs) at Trentham last Monday by encompassing the distance in 2m 26is, is included among bargains of the sale-ring, for when tho Wellington trainer, Mr. J. W. Lowe, purchased him at the Randwick Bales in tho autumn of 1927 he had only to'carry the bidding tp 100 guineas in order to secure the then colt. At two years old Glare was only called upon to contest two races, and that was at the back end of- the season, and this considerate treatment is likely to give him an extended career on the turf, lit he is stated to be a hardy customer. At three years eld Glare only managed to win one small race at Masterton, but this season it is quite a different Glare that is in evidence, and six victories are down to his credit, which include the Invercargill Cup. Up, to the present Glare has contested 23 races and his record stands as follows; Un- / - First. Second. Third, placed, At 2yrs .. 0 •*' 0 0 2 At 3yrs . . 1 0 1 5 At lyrs .. 6 0 1 "7 ' 7 0 2 14 Glare was bred in Australia, and the leading lines in his pedigree read as follows:

Sire: Australian Sun. by Sunstar (son of Sundridge) from Doris, by Loved One (son of See-Saw) from Eosewarne, by St. Frusquin (son of St. Simon). Dam: Lady Travancore, by Flavus (son of Hampton) from Sea Morn, by Nelson (son of King Cole) from Moonga, Uv f Goldsbrough (son of Fireworks).

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES.

PHAR LAP IN THE AUTUMN

There appears to be a consensus of opinion that Thar Lap is even more brilliant at this stage than in the epring. If thut reasoning is a correct summing up, Kightmarch, Amounis and Chide will eacli bo confronted with a very stiff task to •uccessfully' combat the three-year-old son of Night Raid in the weight-for-age races st .the Australian Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting next month.

CHIDE AND NIGHTMARCH. Sydney papers to hand credit the New Zealand horses, Chide and Nightmarch, with training on attractively at Randwick. TIDAL AND THE SYDNEY CUP. The French-bred horse Tidal, owned by Messrs. O. Nicholson and E. It. Davis, of Auckland, ( is standing up to his training si Randwick satisfactorily, and he is included among the fancied division for the Sydney Cup, in which ho figures with tho handy, itnpost of 7.12. LIMERICK'S FULL-BROTHER. Dnnraven, the two-year-old full-brother to Limerick, is still a disappointment. He was saddled up to contest the North Island Challenge Stakes, run at Trentham last Saturday, but, though he only carried G. 12, he failed to get near the leaders. Dtjnraven is engaged in the Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes to bo run at Awapuni next Wednesday, but on his performances there is J!o encouragement to fancy his prospects of leading the field home. A SERIOUS LOSS. Hercules, »;ho cost Sir Malcolm McAlpinti 4000 guineas, and who had won fame as a hurdler in England, met his death under tragic circumstances at Sundown Park ou January 28. While contesting the Prince Albert Hurdle Race he fell, and, a fractured shoulder resulting, the friendly bullet had to be requisitioned. Hercules wns a Stallion. and with his sire, Son-in-Law, a marker] s t U( j success, he was regarded valuable'' property outside his racing capacity.

: FORTHCOMING MEETINGS. manawatu racing club. Acceptances for events to be run on the Cist day of the Manawatu Racing Clilb's Autumn Meeting and final payments for -the Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes and -Manawatu Stakes close with the secretary, .v~"' V.
