SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

ACCIDENTS TO SCHOLARS.

NORTH ISLAND FEDERATION

No definite ruling as to the responsibility for doctors' fees in the case of a doctor being called in by a school teacher in a case of emergency, is obtainable from the Education Department, according to a letter received from the Auckland Education Board at a meeting of the Auckland Primary School Committees' Association last evening. The department knew of no instance where the parent had refused to pay under the circumstances, and was of the opinion that every case would have to be considered in all its legal aspects. The matter was raised by the Te Kuiti District High School at the last quarterly meeting of-the association, and it was decided to obtain a definite ruling from the Education Board. As the board could not obtain a definite decision from the Education Department, it decided to obtain a legal opinion in the matter, which will be made known to the association in due course.

The suggestion that a North Island federation of school committees' associations should be formed was made by the acting-chairman, Mr. G. E. Spooner. There were some 6800 school committee members in the North Island, he said, and such a federation would add considerable weight to requests from committees. There was a South Island federation, Which had arranged a conference at Timaru for this month, and he considered that there was an urgent need for a similar organisation in the North Island. It was only fitting that the movement iihould be put on foot by the Auckland Association, which extended over a larger district than other similar organisations in the North Island. The secretary was iristiucted to make preliminary arrangements for the forming of a North Island federation.

It was agreed to send deputations from the various school committees to their respective local authorities requesting that school committees should be relieved from paying for water for the ordinary purposes of the school. The support of the South Island Federation will be sought in connection with obtaining free water for the schools.
