FIRES ON STEAMERS.
HOBSON'S BAY OUTBREAK. DAMAGE ONLY SLIGHT. \ . (Received March 18, 12.5 a.m.) SYDNEY, March 17. A fire occurred in the boiler room of the steamer Hobson's Bay to-night. Only slight damage was done. The vessel, which is to sail for London to-morrow, will be delayed four hours. COMORIN'S MAILS SUFFER. LOSSES BY PASSENGERS. COLOMBO, March 16. In spite of an assurance given by the local agents of the steamer Comorin there appears to have been a considerable quantity of cargo and Australian mails damaged by the fire on that vessel. Trunks, suitcases, etc., were brought to the customs baggage room late last night and passengers were seen sorting out the contents in search of wearing apparel, much of which had suffered from fire and water.
Expert opinion is to the effect that the ship did not suffer much structural damage. Post Office clerks were sent on board to examine the damaged mailbags and insured parcels and letters. The Comorin left Colombo yesterday.
