THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE:. BANKING SHARES FIRMER The weok opened with a moderate volume of business on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday, and a steady tone in the market. In the gilt-edged division one deal was made, War Loan, 1933, 5£ per cent., being done at £99 2s 6d, which was 2s 6d below a recent Wellington sale, but 2s 6d better than the price obtained locally on February 25. Apart from this, and a selling quotation of £99 5s for Inscribed Stock, 1938, 4£ per cent., steady inquiry for Government investments did not attract sellers. In banks Commercials of Australia had sale three times at 225, thus regaining the level from which they fell at the end of last month. More were wanted at this price, which was 5d better than that of the last Auckland sale, and 2d better than Commercials had been done in the (South on Friday. New Zealands were dealt in twice at the unchanged price of 56s 9d, and buyers were ready to take more. Offers for several other banks shares were increased, Australasias going up Is 6d to £l2 ss, the contributing issue of Nationals nf Australasia 2s to £7 4s, and New South Wales 5s to £39 10s. In coal Pukemiros made a current price sale nt 69s 6d. The final offer was 67s 6d, with sellers asking 7.15. In gas Ancklands lost ground to the extent of a penny with sale at 23s 7d, while the contributing issue was dealt in twice, unchanged, at 17s. In the miscellaneous group a parcel of New Zealand Farmers' Fertilisers changed hands at par, representing a fall of 9d since tlip previous transaction. British Tobaccos at 42s 6d showed a recovery of sixpence upon the price of the last deal. The preference issue of Booth-Mac-donalds were quoted ex div. 3d cheaper at 5s 9d, with no buyers in the market.
