WHEN YOU ARE LIVERISH.
(By Sir Arbuthnot Lane, Bart.)
As a rule it is not until middle-ago that people become conscious of their liver. "My liver is sluggish," is the oft-re-pqated cry of the irritable and dyspeptic middle-aged. In almost all cases the cause of the trouble lies primarily in chronic constipation. The " liverish " person has no appetito for breakfast, but ho is inclined to make up for this at a later meal, after which he feels sleepy, disinclined for effort, and in somo cases may suffer dyspeptic discomforts. During the day there is often a depression of spirits and not infrequently an irritability of temper. Headaches, palpitations, and attacks of giddiness are often complained of and the tongue is usually coated. Insomnia is not uncommon. It is hopeless to imagine that a doctor's tonic is going to work a miracle, and cure your disorder. It is you who* must make the effort to prevent further trouble. Diet jjs naturally all-important. Fatty or fried foods, hot buttered toast, tea-cakes, pork, goose and salihon must be excluded—also sweet wines and stouts. Pickles and sauces are to bo avoided, but there should be an ample allowance of fresh fruit, green vegetables and wholemeal products. Meat should never be taken more than once a day, or, better still, substitute cheese and egg dishes. Abundance of water should be, taken between meals. Lastly, be suro to obtain plenty of exercise in the frcsli air.
