SOLICITORS' CLOTHES.
JUDGE UTTERS REBUKE. A woman solicitor appeared before Judge Sir Alfred Tobin at Westminster County Court, recently, without the solicitor's robe. The judge looked down with an air of pained surprise, and observed that the dignity of the law required that proper attire and subdued colours should be worn in court by solicitors and barristers. The woman solicitor apologised, and explained that she had expected to appear only before the registrar. " There are light colours in the woman's dress," said Judge Sir Alfred Tobin, " and I see two men among the solicitors in front of me whose attire comes within the criticism. I do not want to be difficult in the matter, but I would like it to be understood that in this court the judge desires people to wear absolutely dark . clothes. "That is the only thing consistent with the dignity of the law, dark- meaning black or dark blue. The wearing, of the dark robe of dignity with coloured ! clothes is -not consistent.."
