EXHIBITION OF BREAD.
[HIGH STANDARD OF ENTRIES. JCT ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP. ftOTORUA BAKER'S SUCCESS. An exhibition of bread, described by the Judges as one of tho finest held in NewZealand, is at present being conducted by the Dominion Compressed Yeast Company, Ltd., in its factory grounds at 8, Williampon Avenue, Ponsonbv. There are nearly 400 exhibits, corning from all parts of the Dominion, although most of them are from bakers in the North Island. Many country bakers have entered in the seven classes for competition and they have met vith a considerable measure of success, 'the Federation Championship of New Zealand 1 hnA-ing been won by Mr. T. JohnUtone, of Rotorua. The exhibition is being conducted by the 'company until such time as the New Zealand Federation of Master Bakers is able to take over tho running again. It is confined at present to bread and small goods 5n tho making of which yeast is used, gome of the small breakfast rolls are most nppetising in appearance. All entries had ■jto be baked last Monday and tho judging ;was carried out on Thursday. It was surprising yesterday to see how fresh the (bread had remained. The Dominion Yeast Company Shiold, 3or the championship of New Zealand, >as presented to Mr. Johnstone yesterday at a luncheon given by the directors •of "the company at the Grand Hotel. Mr. S3. R. Cowley, general manager of the company, said it had been definitely proved that the exhibition movement, ■properly conducted, tended to bring out the best in any trade. It was notable that fcoth the winner and the runner-up in the jchampionship came from country districts. ■JThe shield was then presented by Mr. R. H. Montgomery, president of the Federation of Master Bakers. Two of the judges, Mr. A. Freeman, of ■Nelson, and Mr. J. Parkes, of Auckland, complimented Mr. Johnstone, and both referred to the uniformly high standard of 'exhibits. Mr. J. Watson, secretary of ■the Bakers' Union, who had assisted as an official, also spoke. The results in the various classes aro as follows: — Championship of New Zealand—T. Jjohnstone, Rotorua, 1; S. Daly, Maunga--turoto, 2. Short-time dough: Fmdiay's Gold Krust Bakeries, Auckland, 1; J. Somerton, New Plymouth, 2. Vienna 'Ereail: J. Somerton, New Plymouth, 1; J. Burton, Ltd., Auckland, 2. Double upright tin, North Island: V. C. Stephens, Plymouth, 1; T. Johnstone, Rotorua. ;2. Double sandwich tin, North Island: -\V Cowie, Matata, 1; R. J. Lennan, Auckland, 2. Brown bread, North Island: C. D. Loeber, Auckland, 1; Hibihert and Company, Dannevirke, 2. CurTanti bread and buns, North Island: T. Johnstone, Rotorua, 1; Peddio Brothers, lOnehunga, 2.
