PASSENGER TRAFFIC.
BASIS OF CALCULATION. BUSINESS ON NORTH LINE. Some statistics of passenger traffic; on the Kaipara line have been furnished by tho Minister of Railways in his letter to the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. In his original statement, the Minister said there was a daily average of 4720 passengers between stations on the Kaipara line and Auckland, including Newmarket and Mount Eden. The Newmarket passengers form approximately 25 per cent, of the total, and the deviation of the lino would not be to their advantage unless a shuttle service between Newmarket and Morningside were instituted. The Minister has now explained that the figures quoted referred to Newmarket passengers only and took no cognisance of passengers travelling between stations on the Kaipara line and stations on tho main line south of Newmarket. Tho figures were based on an analysis of the actual traffic for year ended -March 31, 1929. the actual details being set out in the following return of passenger journeys from and to Kaipara stations and the three city stations, at ordinary and suburban rates and at season and workers' rates: — From and to Ordinary. |).c. Eden .. 137,970 38.48 130,702 12.48 Mr. Taverner adds that further information as to tho total number of suburban passengers handled out of Auckland station between 4 and 6 p.m. Mondays to Fridays inclusive is not at present available. Detailed counts are now being made, however, and this information will be supplied at an early date.
