REVIEW OF THE WEEK. CONTINUANCE OF LOW PRICES BANKS AND BREWERIES ACTIVE. After a quiet opening, the week which ended yesterday saw a considerable volume of business develop on the New Zealand Stock Exchanges. Buying was not sufficiently keen, however, to cause any marked upward tendency of prices. The exceptionally low values of a number of the most popular stocks were attractive to investors, and some were operated in extensively. The week closed with quieter trading on the Auckland Exchange yesterday. The gilt-edged division of the market maintained a steady tone. Business was confined to several transactions in Government 5£ per cent, investments at £99 ss, and one or two sales of local body debentures. Government investments are still being sought on the local Exchange, with small response from holders. With more than 50 transactions recorded banks again accounted for a large part of the week's trading. Price fluctuations were generally downward, but the low levels already attained did not leave much margin for further movement in this direction. Commercials of Australia provided the bulk of the business in this section, the price fluctuating between 21s 9d and 21s sd. On the Auckland Exchange yesterday they closed a shade firmer with sellers at 225. New Zealands continued the falling trend which has been in evidence since the middle of February, touching 56s 9d, compared with 57s at the close of last week. New South Wales, at £4O, held their ground. English, Scottish and Australians hardened 2s bd to £6 10s. Nationals of New Zealand eased Is to £5 19s. In the insurance section New Zealands, after recovering 3d to 445, were done later at the provious week's closing rate, 43s 9d. South British, which have been firmly quoted at 61s, had sale twice at that figure on the Auckland Exchange at the close of the week. A strong revival of interest was shown in New Zealand Breweries shares, which in the previous week had fallen to a new low level of 80s 9d. Earlier transactions were made at that price, but in brisk trading later, principally on the Chnstclmrch Exchange, a recovery of 2s was shown. Other breweries were steadily sought without response from holders. Extensive dealing in British Tobaccos, practically all on tho Christchurch Exchange, was a feature of tho week's activities in the miscellaneous section. Openine at 425, the shares rose to 42s 6d, but weakened in later Gear Meats showed a decline of 3d with sale twice at 38s. Wilsons Cements had sale on the local Exchange on three occasions at the unchanged price of 38s 9d. Mount Lyells were the only mining investment which attracted much interest. Thev were dealt in at prices averaging about Is less than the closing figure of the previous week, 33s 3d. Moanataiar s were done Id dearer at 2s 3d. Little business was transacted in the other sections of the market, and no notable price movements occurred. CANTERBURY MARKETS. PRICE FOR OATS HARDENS.
