Having pleaded guilty to charges of of breaking and cntoring by night a shop at Ngaruawahia and committing theft, and breaking into a garage at Remuera and stealing a car valued at £350, Francis William Henry Jeeves, aged 20, and Francis Edward Pinker, aged 17, were sentenced by Mr. Ju»tice Herdman in the Supreme Court yesterday. They were not represented by counsel. The car was stolon from the garage of Captain William Ross, Remuera Road, on the evening of February 8. At an early hour the following morning the prisoners were discovered by Constable W- Carran, of Ngaruawahia, stealing goods from a mercery establishment there, and they were arrested by him. "This kind of thing—young Jarrikins stealing motor-cars and committing the crime of burglary—is becoming too common, and must be stopped," said His Honor, in passing sentence. "The only way to stop it is to punish young men like yourselves." His Honor said the probation officer had suggested probation, but that was evidently before he knew about the breaking and entering of the garage and the theft of the motor-car. His Honor said he had since had an opportunity of discussing the matter with tho probation officer, who thought the prisoners should go to the Borstal Institute, and His Honor agreeci with him. They would both be committed to the. Borstal Institute for two years.
