By winning the Newmarket Handicap under the steadier of 10.2 Grecnline succeeded in a task that gives Uim a special place with noteworthy horses that have scored victories in the chief sprint handicap of the Australian turf. The cabled account of tho race Bhows that Greenline won his raco in brilliant style at the right end and in so decisivo a manner as to leave no doubts as to his great galloping ability. Greonline, who was bred by his owner. Mr. L. S. Barnett, of Sydney, made his debut on the turf at two yenrs old, but, further than that ho displayed pace, the two victories he registered at tho youthful staae of his career were only of minor Importance. At three years old his best performance was in a Flying Handicap, in which he beat a good field, carrying 9.0. Last autumn he eclipsed that feat when he romped home in front for tho Leonard Stakes, carrying 9.13. and covering the six furlongs in lm ll}s. This season Greenline has demonstrated in a pointed nianner that lie has advanced, and, though he will probably bo known chiefly as a sprinter, ho certainly takes high position there, even though his record should go no further than the Newmarket Handicap. Up to the present Greenline has contested 38 laces and his record stands as follows: UnFirst. Second Third, placed. At 2yrs .2 1 0 4 At 3yrs . . 3 3 2 5 At 4yrs .. 3 1 2 'i At syrs .. 2 1 1 1 10 6 5 17 The following are tho leading lines in tho pedigree of Greenline: Sire: Greenstead, by Tho Welkin (son of Flying Fox aud grandson of Orme) from Tuning Fork, by Harmonist (son of Silver) from Attraction, by Pilgrim's Progress (sou of Isonomy). Dam: Ayreline, by Ayr Laddio (son qf Ayrshire and grandson of from Orplieline, by Trenton (son of Musket) from Marden Lass, by Beau;dcsert (son of Sterling). ENGLISH-BRED DOLOMITE. FROM HACK TO OPEN COMPANY. When Engl/sh-bred Dolomite was imported to New Zealand last November ho was still eligible for hack races and up to the middle of last month ho was still competing in that company. Having won the stipulated sum which counted him out of tho " hack"* division. Dolomite took a place in open company at tho Marlborough, meeting on tho last day of February, and he signalled his entry by winning the Marlborough Cup under 9.0, and, though tho company he met was weak, he must bo given .credit for running a good milo and a-quarter. When racing in Australia Dolomite only managed to win one small race, and his sale in October last to Mr. H. Murphy, it may be' safely concluded, was duo to tho disappointing character of his form there. Tho sum involved in iho purchase of Dolomite when Mr. Murphy bought tho English horso was not published, but it is safe to conclude that it was only a moderate sum. Dolomite has won £535 in prize-money under Mr. Murphy's colours, and the Wellington sportsman has reason to rejoice over his purchase. Dolomito is a stallion, and, as he was got by Pommern (son of Polymelus and grandson of Cyllencfri he traces to the famous Bend Or lino through very noteworthy channels, and he should be valuable as a sire when his racing days are over. MISCELLANEOUS NOTES. EAGER ROSE. In the decision of the Christmas Handicap at Ellerslie last Boxing Day Eager Rose brought off a surprise victory, and when she led tho field home in tho Herries Memorial Cup on Saturday sho again beat the favourito That there wao no fluke about Eager Rose's victory in tho leading event at Te Arolia Bhe furnished proof on Monday by winning the President's Handicap under increased poundago. TETRARCHATE THE SURPRISE. Tetrarchate, who was responsible for a surprise victory in tho Shaftesbury Handicap at Te Arolia last Saturday, is a three-year-old gelding by Tea Tray from tto Thurnham inaro Volopia. At tho Whangarei meeting m November last ho won tho Kauri Handicap (five furlongs) in easy stylo under 8.8, so that he had at least ono victory to recommend him to notice. AMOUNIS' BRILLIANCY. That Amounis is entitled to bo included in the category of the great racehorses that bavo figured on tho Australian turf ho has long since afforded abundant proof, and the victory achieved by Greenline in the Newmarket Handicap under tho heavy impost of 10.2 serves to further emphasise tho position of Amounis, for in tho decision of the Caulfield Futurity Stakes tho latter defeated his rival in convincing style, and that, too, with slb. in favour of Greenline. GOBLIN MARKET AT LAST. Goblin Market, the four-year-old son of Absurd and Cherry Mart, succeeded in interrupting a series of defeats last week when ho won the two sprint events at tho Marlborough meeting. When offered bv auction as a yearling in the autumn of 1927 Goblin Market created a favourable impresHion. and ho was bouidit by Mr. («■. D. Greenwood for £725. At two years old tha bay gelding won £IOBO in prize-money, but 1)0 failed in all his engagements at three yeais old, and his form at four rears was of so disappointing a character that ho was sent up for sale at Wellington last January aud was allowed to go at 125 guineas. PINK COAT. According to advices to hund from tho South. Pink Coat is now walking quite soundly, but tho big son of Hunting Song is not to bo hurried, and, as further blistoring is stated to bo probable, somo time may be expected to elapso before he is again seen under silk. It is a matter for great regret that unsoundness should have como against Pink Coat almost at tho outsot of his three-year-old career, for that he would havo carried his rccoid \vell beyond tho Harcourt Cup. which ho won at Trentham in October, is a point on which thero is a very general agreement. When next eeason's racing conies round it will bo pleasing . to chroniclo that uil is well with Pink Coat. WHEN THE HAWK WAS A YEARLING. .How The Hawk was missed when a yearling by a would-bo purchaser is related as follows by " Tho Watcher : Mr. Frank Armstrong, in tho courso of a conversation at Danncvirke, remarked to J. M. Cameron that it was only bad luck which prevented him from being tho owner of Tho Hawk. Ho sent a commission to Mr. J; F. Buchanan beforo' the sale for !500 guineas for the brown colt by Martian— Sparrowhawk. Tho colt fetched 180 guineas at tho sales, but it was not Mr, Armstrong's money that bought him. Mr. Buchanan replied to Mr. Armstrong's letter saying that the colt was too weedy a specimen for his friend's money and returned the cheque." .
