TASMANIAN MINES.
BURDEN OF CUSTOMS DUTY.
INQUIRY BY COMMITTEE.
HOB ART. Feb. 21
Members of the Federal Public Accounts Committee, who are visiting'the west, coast in connection with Tasmania s claim for increased assistance from the Commonwealth, inspected the Mount Lvell mines, the manager of which, Mr. Murray, gave evidence that since 18S6 the works had, produced 227.000 tons of cooper, 14,000.000. ounces of silver, and 594,000 ounces of gold. If labour and other conditions remained unchanged the life of the field might be estimated at 20 years. The company was hampered by customs duties on machinery, which, although it could not be made in Australia", had to bear a heavy import duty. For instance new plant, costing £6OOO in America and not economically obtainable elsewhere, would be charged £3OOO duty on arrival.
