MOTOR-CARS AND CYCLES,

A combined race mooting for both motor-cars and motor-cycles lias been arranged by the Auckland Automobile Racing Club, Ltd., to take place at Henning's Speedway, Mangere, on Saturday, March 8. There will be 11 events. Seven for motor-cars and three for motor-cycles, while three cups are opqn for competition. The New Zealand Light Car cup, which was presented some years ago by "the A.A.A. for annual competition, has not been raced for since the meeting at Muriwai Beach in 1927, but it will be competed for at the forthcoming Mangere meeting. There is also the Dawson cup, for the ladies' handicap, and the cup presented by Mrs. H. Butcher, for the closed car handicap. Interest attaches to the motor-cycle side-car event, which will be run in the opposite direction to the other races. This event should provide considerable excitement as the combination outfits can maintain high speeds and, are extremely interesting to watch. Several hundred tons of waste oil will bo sprayed on the speedway in order to reduce the dust nuisance, which has caused inconvenience to competitors and spectators alike at previous meetings. After being sprayed with tho oil, the surface of the track should be in good condition to hold high speeds in safety. In view of the number of cars stolen each year in New Zealand, although the majority are recovered, sometimes in a damaged condition, it is very desirable that some means should bo found foi making the unauthorised use, or sale of a stolen car impossible. In the State of California, there is a system in force in which the car-owner is issued a certificate of legal ownership; it is really a title deed to disclose the legal owner of : a motor vehicle. Beforo the vehiclo can be registered in any other name the certificate of legal ownership must be produced. It is claimed that this makes it impossible for a stolen car to bo used as saleable merchandise. If a car to bought on terms the seller 'retains the title until the car is paid for, then it is made over to the person who has completed tho purchase. If some such scheme was adopted in New Zea- ( land It would must certainly afford carowners and traders substantial protection against tho car thief. While such a. title might' not stop tho thieving joy-rider, it would mako it practically impossible for a stolen car or a car which lias not been paid for, to bo traded in, or sold outright, and would reduco tho car thieving industry to zero. Moreover, it would save thousands of pounds now expended in police efforts to recapture stolen cars. j
