NORFOLK ISLAND TRADE.
PRIVATE SHIPPING SERVICE.: VIEWS OF HINEMOA'S OWNERS. ■ "LARGE SUBSIDE NECESSARY." Endeavours being made by tlio Auck- -> land Chamber of Commerce to have the Norfolk Island shipping service taken over by private enterpo-ise, consequent upon tho intended withdrawal by the/Government of the Maui Pomare were reported upon at a meeting of tbo council ■ of the chamber yesterday. 't Tho Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. J. B. Donald, who had received a deputation from trie conncH, wrote stating that the results of the Gov- • -■ ernment's efforts to establish the trade had been so successful as to warrant the matter being given favourable consideration by private shipping interests. He hoped that the chamber would do all in its power to induce private interests to enter the service. Correspondence which had passed between the chamber and D. W. McKay, Limited, of Invercargill, owners of the i Hinemoa, was also read. The firm, while cot- giving a final reply, stated that a ' large subsidy would be necessary to induce it to consider the proposal favourably, as the demands of the Seamen's Union were for so large a complement that unaided trading could be carried on only at a considerable loss. Mr. M. Stewart, acting-president, said 1 that Mr. Donald had seemed to think | that the iraffic would pay. without a subsidy. All that could be done at present • was to await further word from the owners of the Hinemoa. In the meantime, lie understood, the service would bo continuing, as the last trip oi the Maui Pomare was to be made at the end of March.
