UNREST IN SPAIN.

[VIOLENT REPUBLICANS.

< KING ALFONSO ABUSED.

EXCESSES BY MOBS.

INDUSTRIAL CONFUSION.

SINS OF DICTATOBSHIP.

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright, (deceived February 16, 5.45 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. *5. Despatches from Madrid state that the polico in the Spanisfi capital were in conflict to-d,iy with the unemployed, many of whom were wounded and arrested. The political and industrial situation throughout Spain is most, confused. The Republican leader, Ssnor A. Lerroux, and the Liberal leader, Senor Jr. Unamuno, are violently and abusively attacking King Alfonso. The, public are being enlightened about, the extravagance and maladministration of -the late dictatorship, and this is contributing to criticism of the King. Unemployment is increasing owing to the cessation of General do Rivera's public .works programme. A mob at Barcelona sacked the headquarters of the Patriotic Union which sup-ported-,the Dictatorship. Reinforcements of gendarmes repeatedly charged and finally dispersed the rioters. The King, accompanied by the Diplomatic Corps, has left Madrid by special train for Rio Frio on a hunting expedition.

His Majesty has issued a decree dissolving the National Assembly formed by v General de Rivera. The Morning Post's Madrid correspondent says the new Prime Minister, General Berengue'r, is maintaining a strict censor ship. He aims at preventing new political parties being organised immediately. Republicanism undouW edly is arising with new vitality. There is a tendency on the part of the political elements to combine into groups of Republicans and Monarchists.

A prolonged strike of smelting works employees at Sagunto gave rise to the report that a revolt had broken out there, but this is without foundation.
