SHEEP RAISING.
INTENSIVE FARMING.
results in Auckland.
On his arrival at Auckland recently, after having made a- tour of Great Britain!,' Mr. F. Milner, principal of "VVaitaki Hoys' High School, near Oamaru, was interviewed by a press representative and in the course of some very interesting observations referred to the wonderful progress made in agricultural practices in ' England. Mr. Milner quoted the case of an English farmer who had so improved his pastures that he was now able : to carry as many as 7? sheep per acre. This is indeed a wonderfully good performance audi reflects creditably on the farmer con-; cerned. It may not be generally known that equally good or even better progress is being made in parts of New Zealand and that some x great records are being put up by"* farmers who are working on the most approved modern lines. ■ for example Mr. F. J..Fawell, of Hamilton, who has a farm of 150 acres at Horotiu has- within a period of nine •yaws', increased / the -carrying capacity from 33 dairy cows to 11C0 ewes. During the winter of 1929 Mr. Farrell carried 1000 ewes and 50 head of cattle on graiis with the addition of some ba.y cut on the farm the previous season. Early spring the tattle were removed and 300 in-hmih ewes were added, thus making : 1100 fiwos in all. These ewes were lambed on the farm and 10CO of the lainis went off fat just after .Christmas. Mr. Farrell will again winter not ess than IQOCj ewes and some cattle as he has again cut a very nice paddock of 17 acres h The secrets:of Mr. Farrell's access ana (1) small paddocks, (2) regular top-dies-sing with superphosphate, and (3) fiequefilt chain-1) arrowing lj» pastures are kept short and clean a , t0 J fertility is maintained by fegulai top dl C)2' cases could belted'a? evidence of the great strides inc.de in this coutitiy —cases of dairy farmers maintaining . 'cow per acre the year round-but .even this one will suffice to show that, a,ew, Zealand is not lagging m lh * matter of agricultural development.
