ESCAPE FROM FLAMES.
MAN'S SEVERE ORDEAL.;
FIVE-ROOMED HOUSE BURNED,
A very narrow escape was experienced -by Mr.,W. A. Cubis, of 25, King Edward Street, Dominion Road, when be woke about one o'clock on Saturday morning to find the house in flames. Forcing his way along a passage filled with smoke and flames, Mr. Cubis reached the open with his face and arms scorched and his hair sifnged. The' fire started at the back of thg house and when Mr. Cubis woke.the flames were entering his room, which is about halfway up the passjge. The alarm was given by a taxi-driver anrl when the Mount Eden Fire Brigade arrived the whole place was in flames. Three rooms were completely destroye'd and the two others were considerably damaged. The side-windows of a neighbouring house occupied by Mr. P. Dolley were broken by the heat and the wall was considerably charred. Mr. Cubis' house was insured for £750 in the Alliance Assurance Company. There was no insurance on the furniture, none of which was saved.
