ROADS AND BRIDGES.
PROPOSED ABATTOIR DISTRICT.

The Hauraki Plains County Council has been advised by the resident 'engineer to the Public Works Department that damage caused to the Waitakaruru-Morrinsville Road could-not bo properly classified as flood damage, as it was entirely due to the decayed condition of the bridgo oh Vincent's Flat. Tho damage wtfs finally caused by a flood in January, but if any application was mado for Government 'assistance for reconstruction it would bo moro a matter for subsidy, payablo from tho bridge renewals vote. A new bridgo was required. Tho engineer adviscij the deviation of the road from tho flat, lhe suggestion was referred to tho Works Committee.
Settlors affected by the flooding of the Waitakaruru Stream below Coxhead's filling stated that they proposed to reerect the stopbarik carried away by a flood, and raise the bank 18in, Tho chairman reported that he had advised the settlers that the county could not assist as tho damngo had been caused by negligence on the part of the settlers. It was agreed tc donate £lO and lend tho settlers machinery. Six tenders were received by the council at its meeting this week for the replacement of the bridgo over tho Waitakaruru Stream on Mahuta Road, ibat of Mr. W. 11. Taylor, Paeroa, £516, was accepted. . Tho Local Government Loans Board sanctioned a proposal to borrow £3OOO for tho purpose of forming and metalling roads in the Mangatarata roads loan special rating district. Tho' Hon. G. W. Forbes, Minister of Agriculture, advised that in -view of objections lodged by petitions against certain areas being included in the proposed abattoir district, and of protests received against the proposed delegation of tho council's abattoir powers to a company, it would be necessary to make an exhaustive examination of the position from all points of view. It was anticipated that a decision would be reached at an early date. The Ngatea branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union advised that it had written the Minister urging the granting of tho council's request in regard to the abattoir area.
Tho engineer, Mr. F, Basham, was appointed to maintain the council's Hauraki West water supply schema.at the extra roniuaevation of £SO per annum. Thu. clerk, Mr. E. A. Mahoney, was accorded a 'vote of congratulation on the freedom of tho balance-sheet fronj "tags,"
