ASSISTING MIGRANTS.

CONFERENCE IN LONDON.

FENTON NOT TO ATTEND.

(Received February 14, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 13

The Commonwealth Minister of Trade and Custom's, Mr. J. E. Fenton, does not intend to attend the conference of British representatives on migration, as owing to the slowing down of the assisted passage system he considers that no good purpose will be served by the discussion. New Zealand, he says, proposes not to resume assisting migrants for 12 months, and he sees no possibility that Australia will do so sooner. The Dominions' Office has informed the officials at Australia House that the grant of £15,000 a year for free advertising in Britain, which was linked up with migration, will probably be cut off.
