OPERA FOR THE SCREEN.

FAMOUS COMPOSER'S PROMISE &

. Signor Mascagni, composer of such famous Italian operas as " Cavalleria Rusticana," has written an article announcing his intention to write an opera especially for the talking and singing films. Modern opera, he says, is a costly production, and consequently the price of a scat is prohibitive for many people who can on the other hand pay for a seat in a cinema.

Since such famous singers as Chaliapin and Titta Kuffo havo signed contracts in the United States, he continues, and since all artistic innovations started in America end by invading Europe, it is necessary to keep abreast with the times. " From the artistic standpoint all this is a great pity, and those who will suffer the effects most aro Italy and France, which have artistic traditions. The United States has nothing to lose. Sho can go forward on the road she has chosen, but can wo do so?" 1

A singing film which Signor Mascagni recently heard in Paris opened his eyes to the possibilities in this field. Hence his decision to compose an opera intended Bolely for use in the cinema.
