PANMURE-HOWICK HIGHWAY.

TENDERS FOR CONCRETING.

The Mariukau County Council met yesterday, tho chairman, Mr. F. M. Waters, presiding. The countj r engineer, Mr. R. J. Page, was instructed to call tenders for the reconstruction and concreting of the Pan-mure-Howick main highway. Mr. Page stated in his report that contract plans and specifications had been completed, and negotiations with the Main Highways Board regarding authority to commence work were well advanced.

The engineer reported that the recent fine weather had permitted the resumption of outside works which had been deferred. In would not now be possible to complete the schedule, but efforts would be made to finish as much as possible. Given reasonable weather conditions, practically the whole of the plant and a large number of men now employed on riding and contract works would be engaged continuously for the next three months.

The engineer was authorised to carry out reconstruction work on Cox's Culvert, on the Pupatoetoe-Howick highway. The Main Highways Board has granted £2OO on a £2 ior £1 basis for this work.

The report of the county inspector, Mr. C. If. Clark, showed that 28 applications for building permits, involving £7508, had been received. Several applications to remove temporary dwellings, erected by the Government at Orakei, to beaches in the county were refused, as the buildings did not comply with the by-laws. 'llie Main Highways Board wrote advising of the payment of £398 Is Id to the credit of the council's account, the amount to be allocated as follows: — Mangere Riding, £l9 17s sd; Paku/anga Riding, £9l 15s 7d; Papakura Riding, £238 14s 2d; Papatoetoe Riding, £36 5s Id; Turanga Riding, £ll 8s lOd. A letter was received from the Cockle Bay Ratepayers' and Improvement Association suggesting the provision of bathing sheds, two street lamps and various road works to improve the amenities of Cockle Bay. The matter was referred to the riding member and the engineer for consideration. The East Tamaki Co-op-erative Dairy Company was granted the. lease of a small section of land on the corner of Preston and Whitford Roads for beautification purposes.
