ACCESS FOR WHITFORD.
PROPOSED NEW ROAD.
deputation to council
The provision of new road access to Whit ford was urged by a deputation of Turanga ratepayers which waited on the Manukai* County Council yesterday. Captain White said the ratepayers in the district had suffered for years because of bad access, and now felt that the timo was ripe for the work to lie commenced. There were only three settlers on the Maungaroa Gorge Boad, and it would be 110 hardship to them lo have to use the proposed new route. The total cost would probably bo in the vicinity of £7OOO or £BOOO. " Another member of the deputation pointed out that tho boat service to Beachlands and Maraetai had been discontinued, but buses might be induced to run if a better road were provided. The new route would probably in time be used as the main highway to Thames. Tho chairman, Mr. F. M. Waters, said various financial difficulties stood in tho way of the scheme. The restrictions imposed by the Local Government Loans Board made tho raising of money for the purpose very difficult, while no assistance would be forthcoming from tho Main Highways Board, as the new road was not 'of a sufficiently high standard to bo declared a main highway.
The county, engineer was instructed lo prepare plans and an estimate of cost. The mat ter would bo further considered by the council.
