ADVANCE STEADILY MAINTAINED

OFFSET TO LOWER PRICES

The remarkable increase in tho daiiy production of tho Auckland province continues to bo maintainod, and up to tho end of January, making sevon months of the season, the yield is approximately eight per cent, in advance of that for the corresponding period of last season and constitutes a- record. In view of the lower price that is being paid for butter-fat this season, tho increase is particularly gratifying, and gives every reason for an optimistic outlook regarding the season's prospects. Although production opened quietly in July and August, the following month saw an increase in tho output which has been steadily maintained to date. Ip January the butter received at the grad-ing-stores in Auckland amounted to 172,387cwt., an increase of 17,075cwt. compared with January, 1929. Cheeso showed a decreaso, tho quantity boing 37.874cwt., compared with 40,162cwt. Tho average price paid for butter-fat last season was Is 4>|d per lb., when tho total production in the province for tho first sevon months was 78,693,0001b. This furnished a return of approximately £5,492,000. This season, when the average price is about Is a production to date of 84,850,0001b. furnishes a return of £5,480,000. The decrease in value is, therefore, only £12,000, or approximately 0.2 per cent. Details of Quantities.

Following is a summary of the quantities of butter and cheese received into store in Auckland during January, followed, by the receipts for the season to date, and the quantity in storo at tho end of January, with comparisons for tho corresponding periods of last soason in each caso:—

Tho quantity of butler in store at the end of last month was more than double that for the corresponding month.- of last year, and 50,000cwt. greater than tho amount in store at the end of December. Tho amount of cheese still in store is over 65 per cent, greater than last season, and over 80 per cent, greater than at the end of December.

The following table shows tho details of tho production of butter and cheese in Auckland in terms of pounds of butterfat for the first seven months of the current dairying year, compared with the corresponding periods of the preceding season:—

Space for the shipment of, 648,580 boxes of butter and 250,800 crates of cheese has been allotted by the Dairy Produce Board on steamers leaving New Zealand between February 20 and April 15. Following are the details of shipments by various steamers, showing the date of departure from New Zealand, the due date in the United Kingdom, and the number of boxes of butter and crates of cheese to be shipped from Auckland and all Dominion ports, tho figures for butter being given above those for cheese in each case:—

Tho Turakinn, Karamen, Westmoreland, Cumberland, Malakana and Port Viclor arc to toko produce for tho west coast of the United Kingdom, tho allocations foY tho Matakana and Port Victor being dept'nd'int on applications for space for shipment to tho west coast of Britain. The Whangaroa Dairy Company has decided to pay out Is lJ,d per pound for first grado butter-fat anrt Is 2d for finest supplied in January. An increaso in output of "nearly eight tons for tlio month was reported, and tho grading at the Auckland store had been maintained, being 931z and 94. Tho directors decided to call a special general meeting of shareholders, to bo held in Kaco flail next Thursday afternoon. Tho shareholders will bo asked to givo tho diroctors power to proceed with tho erection of a new factory, to bo erected on tlio company's property adjacent to. the present factory, and to provide finance as ' follows: —Building, £5500; additional maclvinory and removing presont plant t<s now building, £2500. Tho directors have arranged finance, subject to tho approval of shareholders, the only alteration necessary in payments to suppliers being an increase from id to id per pound for butter-fat supplied for. share capital. This will enable the whole to bo refunded in fivo years. The shareholders will also io asked to sanction an increaso in share aro to bo called for all cream collecting contracts for a five-year period.
