IDLE AND DISORDERLY
THREE MEN CHARGED. TWO SLEEPING UNDER SHOP. Charges of being idle and disorderly were preferred against three men in the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. W. R McKean, S.M. "It is difficult to know what to do with this man." said Sub-Inspector McCarthy, when William James Hamilton, aged 72, appeared. Constable King said that accused refused to pay a tram-faro on Saturday afternoon, saying that he had no placo to go to. His only sustenance during the day had been a glass of beer.
Accused said that he had many re la tives to whom he could go.
"Well, yor must go to them," tho magistrate said. "You will not bo allowed to sleep out." Staff-Captain Holmes, of the Salvation Army, said that accused had refused to enler an army homo, lie maintained that he could stay at the best hotel it ho wished.
Commenting that accused had 147 previous convictions, tho magistrate said that he needed caro, which ho could obtain in a Salvation Army homo. Accused was convicted and ordered to como up for sentcnco within three months. Tho magistrate warned him that if ho failed to stay at tho Army home ho would bo sent to gaol. Found sleeping underneath an empty shop in Grey's Avenue early on Sunday morning, Alexander Mooro, aged 45, and Joseph Hunter Montgomery, aged 58, both pleaded not guilty. Evidence was given by a constable that tho mon had newspapers for covering and tho surroundings were very filthy. "It is tho samo old story," said tho magistraLo, when Mooro said that ho had been working in tho country and had arrived in tho city to spond a cheque. Ho said that ho had no money, but could get back to his job in the country. "Theso men will not leave town until they havo to," tho sub-inspector remarked. Mooro wns convicted, sentence boing suspended for tbrco months. The caso against Montgomery was adjourned for a month. Accused said that ho had a home and was at present seeking work. It was stated that ho had no previous convictions.
